Maksym Arkhanhelskyi, a partner at Synegor Law Firm, spoke about the firm’s areas of practice and the experience it has gained, and also shared advice on how businesses can prepare for tax audits in 2023–2024

— Synegor has been operating in the market for 10 years. Maksym, please tell us, how did your journey in the Ukrainian legal market begin?

— Synegor is the brand name of our law firm. The foundation of any law firm – and indeed the legal business in general – is its team.

My career in law began back in 2011. During my time working my way up from a lawyer to co-owner and acting head of the financial and legal department at a holding company in Ukraine, I’ve gained an understanding of the challenges lawyers face, the qualities they need to possess, and, more generally, the legal services required by businesses operating within the framework of Ukrainian legislation.

— What was 2023 like for the Synegor team? Which areas are you currently focusing on?

— Overall, looking back at the preliminary results for 2023, I can confidently call this year a year of growth. For myself, I define it as follows:

• New partnerships. This year, we have brought new partner attorneys onto our team, as expanding our range of services always depends on having specialist experts within the team who can provide legal services promptly and to a high standard.

• Expansion of our portfolio of legal services. We have launched a new practice area offering comprehensive legal support for the incorporation of legal entities outside Ukraine in countries such as Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and the UAE. We have focused our attention on expanding the list of countries in which we provide this type of service, and we also have plans to open an office under the Synegor brand in Europe in the near future.

• Charity. Over the past five years, our work to help the needy and vulnerable sections of society, children’s homes and people with disabilities has evolved, culminating in the establishment by our team of the Synegor Charitable Foundation. Our clients also have the opportunity to get involved in our charitable work and make a donation, which will be used for its intended purpose to provide food, hygiene products, medicines and gifts to those in need, people with disabilities and children’s homes.

— Could you tell us what sort of enquiries clients most frequently make?

— We receive the highest number of enquiries regarding comprehensive services for structuring our clients’ business models. This includes corporate law, intellectual property law and tax law.

Clients are also keenly interested in comprehensive defence in white-collar crime proceedings and in challenging decisions made by regulatory and law enforcement bodies, as well as their unlawful actions and omissions.
